Peltor TEP-100 Digital Earplugs Kit Review – 2024

"Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion... in private self-defense." - John Adams

Our Comprehensive Review Of The 3M Peltor TEP-100 Earplugs

The Peltor TEP-100 Tactical Earplugs Kit (it’s what TEP stands for) is the earplug equivalent of a set of electronic earmuffs. Peltor provides a set of earplug ends with microphones and speakers in them that can seal your ear canal off and keep out unwanted noise while re-broadcasting desired sounds at a safe volume level.

The kit comes with two rechargeable plug bases and three sets of tips, allowing you to modify your earplugs to fit both the shape of your ear canal and the environment in which you’re using them.

The current price of the TEP-100 earplugs on Amazon.com is listed below:

Before we get into the nitty-gritty technical stuff, I want to briefly mention how cool these are. Peltor even ships them in a carrying case that doubles as a charger.

While these earplugs are pretty expensive, I can almost justify the cost based on how much they make me feel like a secret agent. No other hearing protection on the market comes in the form of customizable high-tech earplugs that come in a spy briefcase.

Functionality

In terms of actual functionality, the TEP-100 offers quite a lot. The earplug tips have noise reduction ratings that vary from 23 to 30 decibels. This is quite a lot.

When you use the strongest tips, these will rival the most robust passive ear muffs when it comes to protecting your ears. It’s a bit harder to achieve the full amount of noise reduction with ear plugs (you have to very carefully follow the instructions).

Still, these are adequate protection for almost any shooting situation on their own. If you want to get really crazy, you could even wear a set of ear muffs over them.

Sound Features, Sound Quality & Noise Reduction

The sound quality that comes out of these is pretty good, especially considering how small they are. What’s more impressive is how good the circuitry is.

Despite needing to fit everything inside a tiny earplug, Peltor has managed to cram in a pretty good set of logic for determining which sounds to allow through the earplug and which ones to block. You’ll have no trouble understanding speech or picking up subtle environmental noises with these in.

Operating the single button takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s a nice feature. You can still change volume settings and turn noise pass-through on and off while you’re in the field.

Each earbud has a battery life of something like 16 hours. You can charge them in the carrying case at any time, however. The case itself is powered by 3 AA batteries.

Regrettably, this particular product can’t hook up to anything else. I would have loved to see Bluetooth integration or even an MP3 jack in one or both earplugs. I’d be able to feel like James Bond even more.

As it is, they only provide me with pretty darn good hearing while still protecting my ears.

Price / Pros & Cons / Other Important Features

The Peltor TEP 100 kit is fairly expensive. You could comfortably outfit your whole house with Howard Leight Impact Sports for the price of a single pair. For many shooting enthusiasts, this is going to put it well out of reach.

I think most of us would rather buy a bunch of new gun parts or a year’s worth of ammo than a fancy set of earplugs, no matter how nice they are.

If you can afford them, however, the TEP offers a completely unique take on electronic ear protection. You’ll be able to keep your ears safe and hear ambient noise without having to cram your ears into a set of hot, sweaty cups that squeeze your skull for hours.

There will be no top band digging into your scalp. You’ll be able to turn your head back and forth freely without the added weight of a set of earmuffs.

Remember that the audio quality offered by the TEP is remarkably good. Peltor has basically gotten rid of all of the downsides of a set of electronic earmuffs without adding any new ones.

Overall & Final Thoughts

If I could justify it, I would absolutely spring for a set of these. Instead, though, I’m going to wait for a few years for the technology to get cheaper.

As much as I would like to have these earplugs now, I’m sure that they’ll be half the cost within a decade. In the meantime, I’ll have to live with basking in the glory of the folks who are rich enough to buy them now.
