Detailed Operation & Features

The Peltor Sport Tactical 300 Electronic Hearing Protector is one of the better sets of hearing protection on the market. It’s a solid choice for any shooting enthusiast who’s looking for great sound and speaker quality.

While they’re not perfect, most of their flaws can be solved with a bit of fabric and tape.

Peltor sells these earmuffs in two versions. The Tactical 500s offer slightly more hearing protection (26 db) and Bluetooth functionality, while these 300s offer 24 dB of noise reduction and are slightly lighter.

They’re also quite a bit cheaper, making them a much more reasonable purchase for most shooters.

Needless to say, 24 dB of noise reduction is pretty good, as far as electronic earmuffs are concerned. The addition of speakers, microphones, and wires makes it more difficult for manufacturers to keep sound from getting to your eardrums.

Most experts say (and I agree) that 22 dB is the minimum amount of noise reduction that you want for shooting. These earmuffs block about twice as much sound energy as a -22 dB rated set.

While you might not hear the difference, your ears will almost certainly feel better after a few hours of shooting. Still, you’ll want to pair these with earplugs if you’re shooting larger weapons, shooting at an indoor range, or both.

Comfortability

The cups on the Peltor Tactical 300 earmuffs are on the smaller side. They’re very comfortable for most people no doubt while having plenty of padding that can form a tight seal easily.

That being said, if you have large ear lobes, you might want to demo a pair before you buy. You might have to fold up your earlobes to get the cups to fit, and that’s not very comfortable for most people as you can imagine.

The band is lightweight and adjustable, but it doesn’t come with any padding. If you plan to wear these over a hat, this is perfect. Without any padding in the way, you’ll have no problems getting all of your headgear to coordinate.

On the other hand, if you don’t plan to use a hat, the un-padded band tends to get uncomfortable after an hour or two. You can cut up an old t-shirt to make your own padding, which should keep you comfortable through longer wear, but it will take a few minutes of work.

Batteries & Battery Life

These earmuffs take two AA batteries. The battery compartment is easy to open and features a tether to keep the lid from disappearing during maintenance.

There seems to be plenty of battery life although we haven’t tested them yet to their full limit yet, but after using them around 2 hours straight, the battery still seemed strong and the operation was not lagging. Of course, you can certainly get a rechargeable battery pack if you’re worried.

Sound Features & Sound Quality

Perhaps the best feature offered by the Peltor Tactical 300s is the audio quality. The electronics in these earmuffs do an incredible job at identifying which sounds you want to suppress and which sounds you want to hear.

The compression circuit automatically adjusts itself based on your shooting environment. This means your environmental awareness will return in record time after each shot outdoors, but you won’t hear any loud echoes or reverberation indoors.

Clear Voice Tracking

The “clear voice tracking” feature is one of the best things I’ve ever experienced in a set of earmuffs. While other ear muffs let all sound through at more-or-less the same volume, these Peltors have some sort of technical wizardry that lets speech come through incredibly clear without any squelching, hissing, or background noise.

If you’ve ever used electronic hearing protection, you probably know what I’m talking about. Sometimes, it seems like you have to turn the gain all the way up to hear your friends, which makes every little background noise incredibly loud.

With these Peltors, you’ll be able to hear your friends easily without having to turn things up and that is definitely a plus when you’re out in the woods especially while hunting with friends.

Finally, although it’s a pretty standard feature these days, the Tactical 300s come with an aux jack that you can use to plug in a phone or mp3 player. This is a great way to listen to music or podcasts while you’re at the shooting range or just using them around the house.

Overall & Final Thoughts

After having played with these and tested them for a while I think that the Peltor Tactical 300s are one of the better buys that you can make when it comes to electronic hearing protection. If you’re looking for electronic protection, you want something that lets sound through so you can interact with your environment more easily.

While the Tactical 300s aren’t the cheapest or most comfortable pair on the market, they have some of the best audio circuits available. This means you can hear people around you and react to audio cues much better than you would be able to with a different set of earmuffs.
